Surgery planning for tumor resections

Amongst cancer diseases, primary and secondary (metastatic) liver tumors are a major cause of death worldwide. With the improvement of treatment concepts, surgeons are increasingly confronted with the questions whether a tumor disease is resectable. Especially with multiple tumors or lesions located centrally or close to the major such decision can hardly be made solely on cross-sectional imaging.

Oncological Resection

MeVis offers a unique service for three-dimensional reconstruction of the image data which gives the user an accurate picture of the liver:

  • Calculation of tumor size and visualization of tumor location
  • Calculation of the individual risk of liver vessels and territories, depending on the safety distance to the tumor
  • Visualization of the virtual resection
  • Calculation of the volumes of remaining and resected liver
  • Relative positions of the different vascular systems
  • Calculation of the size and location of the liver segments

From this data, therefore, the optimum between thorough removal of the tumor and maximum protection of the liver can be found.
